Understanding Islamic Values and Traditions

Objective:

The objective of this Islamic Studies course is to provide students with a foundational understanding of Islamic teachings, values, ethics, and cultural traditions. The course will emphasize respect, faith, and moral development while fostering a deeper connection with the teachings of Islam.


Grade 1: Introduction to Basic Islamic Concepts

Focus Areas:

  • Introduction to Allah and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): Understanding the concept of Allah as the one true God, and learning about the life and significance of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the final messenger. Children will be taught to respect the Prophet and Allah’s teachings.
  • Basic Islamic Manners and Etiquette: Introduction to good manners in Islam such as greeting others with "Assalamu Alaikum," showing respect to parents, teachers, and elders, and saying "Bismillah" before eating or starting any task.
  • Understanding the Quran and its Importance: Introduction to the Quran as the Holy Book of Islam, with emphasis on its divine origin and role as guidance for life. Children will learn to respect the Quran and understand its importance in Islam.

Grade 2: Exploring Prophetic Stories and the Five Pillars

Focus Areas:

  • Stories of Prophets: Students will learn about the lives of some of the major Prophets in Islam, such as Prophet Adam (AS), Prophet Ibrahim (AS), Prophet Musa (AS), and Prophet Isa (AS). These stories teach lessons of faith, patience, and devotion.
  • The Five Pillars of Islam: Introduction to the core practices of Islam: Shahada (faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (charity), Sawm (fasting), and Hajj (pilgrimage). This will be explained in simple terms and with examples.
  • Basic Islamic Prayers and Supplications: Children will learn the basic daily prayers (Salah) and supplications like "Bismillah" and "Alhamdulillah."

Grade 3: Deeper Understanding of Islamic Teachings

Focus Areas:

  • More Detailed Stories from the Quran: Students will explore more detailed stories from the Quran, such as the stories of Prophet Yusuf (AS) and Prophet Yunus (AS), with an emphasis on their moral and spiritual lessons.
  • The Significance of Ramadan and Eid: Understanding the importance of the holy month of Ramadan, its role in spiritual purification, fasting, and charity. The significance of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as celebrations of faith will also be covered.
  • Islamic Ethics and Morality: Introduction to Islamic teachings on kindness, honesty, respect for others, and forgiveness. This will include simple examples of how to embody these virtues in daily life.

Grade 4: Islamic Holidays, Contributions, and Laws

Focus Areas:

  • Islamic Holidays and their Importance: Detailed lessons on the significance of Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Islamic New Year (Hijri calendar). The cultural and spiritual importance of these days will be explained.
  • Islamic Contributions to Science, Art, and Culture: Introduction to the significant contributions made by Muslims in fields like medicine, astronomy, architecture, and art. Children will learn about famous scholars and thinkers, such as Ibn Sina and Al-Khwarizmi.
  • Understanding Islamic Laws (Halal and Haram): Basic understanding of what is allowed (halal) and what is forbidden (haram) in Islam. Examples will be provided, such as halal food and actions, and the importance of making ethical choices in life.

Grade 5: Advanced Understanding of Islamic Teachings

Focus Areas:

  • Advanced Understanding of Quranic Verses: Students will explore more complex verses from the Quran and understand their meanings, with a focus on key themes such as justice, mercy, and the unity of mankind. Reflection on the teachings of these verses will be encouraged.
  • History of Islam and Its Spread: A brief history of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the early spread of Islam, and the development of the Islamic civilization across different regions. This includes the role of the Caliphs and key historical events.
  • Learning About Islamic Communities Around the World: Understanding the diversity of Islamic communities across different countries, cultures, and traditions. Students will learn how Islam is practiced in various regions, including the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
